Namaste! I'm Monica Groover. For nearly 20 years, I have been an Ayurveda teacher and director at three different Ayurveda schools. I was also part of the exam preparation group and contributed to the questions for both the Ayurveda Counselor and Ayurveda Practitioner exams.
Preparing for the NAMACB Ayurveda Health Counselor Exam
Several students have sought my advice regarding the Ayurveda Health Counselor Certification exam. This prompted me to write a series of articles to help a wider audience. If you're interested in personalized guidance, I'm available for one-on-one sessions via Zoom. I often find myself repeating this information, so creating these articles seemed beneficial.
Steps to Register for the NAMACB Exam for Ayurveda Counselor or Practitioner
To register for the National Ayurvedic Medical Association Certification Board (NAMACB) exam, follow these steps:
STEP ONE: Verify Eligibility
Confirm that you meet the eligibility criteria established by the NAMACB. Check the competency guidelines on their exam information page.
Did you attend a NAMA-reviewed institution like Narayana Ayurveda or a similar one and complete the 600-Hour Ayurveda Counselor program?
Do you have anatomy credits from a community college? Online options are acceptable.
Have you completed 40 hours of in-person class credits?
The good news is that even if you attended a school not reviewed by NAMA, you can still apply until June 30, 2026. This is stated on their website:
"All candidates from all schools, regardless of candidacy/accreditation status, are welcome to apply and take the board certification exams until June 30, 2026. As of 7/1/26, graduates from non-AAC-candidacy/accreditation schools will no longer be eligible to take the exams, with the exception of BAMS graduates."
STEP TWO: Apply
Complete the appropriate application form and submit the non-refundable application fee. Currently, the application fee for an accredited program is $75.
Fill out the application form from the NAMACB website.
STEP THREE-Contact your School Have your school sign the the TRANSCRIPT RELEASE FORM and confirm that you meet the requirements. Do not forget to fill and sign the first page. I have had so many students submit this without their signature. The second page will be filled by your school.
Submit your anatomy/physiology credits to your school.
The school will then submit these three items to NAMACB board on their website:
a) Transcript Release form (filled and signed by both you and the school representative)
b) Your Certificate and Ayurveda Health Counselor or Practitioner Transcript. (The transcript must specify the topics study with hours, number of client encounters done in person or virtually as well as the required in person class hours)
STEP 4 Review by NAMACB
Your application will be assessed by the NAMACB. If you meet the requirements, you will receive an email with instructions for registering for the exam.
Once you receive approval, register for the exam promptly. The exam must be completed within six months of the application date; otherwise, the registration fee will be forfeited.
STEP 4 Take the Exam
Follow the provided instructions to complete the exam. You can take it at an Onsite Proctor Center or remotely through Online Proctoring, provided you meet the necessary technology and security requirements.
According to my information, the exam takes place at Pearson Vue exam centers or affiliates nationwide. They require you to arrive early and bring proof of identity and exam papers. If it occurs at a different location, I may not have that information.
STEP 5 Receive Results
The NAMACB will send you an email with your detailed test results within two to four weeks of your exam date. You can view your pass/fail status immediately after submitting the exam.
Important Considerations
As of July 2025, applicants must provide documentation of completing an Ayurvedic Accreditation Commission (AAC) candidate for accreditation program or one that is already accredited. Narayana Institute of Vedic Arts (my school) is one of the candidates for accreditation.
Graduates from non-AAC-candidacy/accreditation schools, can take the exams until June 30, 2026.
You can submit your application immediately after graduating from your program.
Your school must upload your transcript following the instructions on the NAMACB Transcript Release Form.
If you pass the exam and are a new professional member of NAMA, you might qualify for a $100 discount on your first year's dues if paid within 30 days of receiving your invitation.
