Avipattikar churna
Avipattikar churna

Avipattikara Churna is a classical Ayurvedic herbal powder formulation widely used to support hyperacidity, gastritis, indigestion, constipation, and other Pitta-related digestive disorders. Do note that Ayurveda is not recognized in the USA and Ayurveda-its practitioners, herbs or formulas are not allowed to treat, cure or diagnose any disease. This blog is simply for informational purpose only.

In Traditional Ayurveda, instead of tablets we like to mix powders -and this formula is called churna. In the last six months I have met many clients with a combination of constipation or diarhea, indigestion and acid reflux, or heartburn. When people have mixed symptoms like this -it may also be a form of Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS. One of the formulas that ancient Ayurvedic texts suggest is Avipattikar Churnam.

Here is the sanskrit verse from our texts.

Amlapittam nihanti ashu , Vibandham malamutrayoho Agnimandya, Prameha and Durnama nashanam

Avipattikar churna formula supports acid reflux, sour belching and constipation, difficulty in urinating or blockage of stool.

It is even suggested to support low digestive fire in diabetes or pre-diabetes and given to those with fiery form of IBS.

### Dosage (General guideline – always consult an Ayurveda practitioner first, You can also contact me via whatsapp or Dm me on instagram to book a consultation from me online also on zoom-starting from $50)

- Adults: 3–6 grams (≈ ½–1 teaspoon) twice daily with either warm water, or mixed with ghee, or with warm golden milk. Sometimes mixed with other formulas with coconut water, or ashgourd juice.

- Usually taken before meals or after meals or night--depends on the person, their age and their unique symptoms so that's why please consult a praxtitioner.

### How It Works According to Ayurveda

- Strongly pacifies aggravated Pitta dosha

- Mildly balances Vata (through gentle laxative action)

- Cooling and soothing effect on the entire digestive tract because of high sugar candy and bitter herbs

- Regulates upward and downward movement of Apana Vayu (helps both reflux and constipation)

### Modern Research & Benefits (Evidence-based)

- Antacid & anti-ulcerogenic properties (animal studies show protection against gastric ulcers)

- Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects

- Improves gastric emptying and reduces acid secretion

- Mild laxative effect due to Trivrit (does not cause gripping or dependency when used short-term)

Precautions & Contraindications

- Contains high amount of sugar → use cautiously in diabetes (some brands make sugar-free versions)

- Avoid in diarrhoea or loose motions especially pitta type

- Not recommended in pregnancy (because of Trivrit which has strong purgative action)

- Overdose can cause loose stools

- Long-term high-dose use should be monitored by a physician

If you are planning to use it, it is best to take it under guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner who can adjust dosage and duration according to your Prakriti and specific condition.
