In the last two years, as I moved to a small town in North Central Florida, where there are actually six seasons with an actual winter, I found myself suggesting different varieties of Golden milk (or as we call it haldi-kshira-paka) to my clients.
First of all, dont even think about taking golden milk as a cold beverage, and definitely not in zero fat milk. It defeats the whole point. The turmeric will release curcumin-its healing compound in fat and while hot-not in cold milk. All, right lets back up. What is Golden Milk?
Golden milk is a warm, comforting drink suggested in ancient Ayurvedic texts where organic cow's milk is heated along with spices like turmeric, cardamom, dates or cinnamon. Then cooled and drunk before going to bed. This drink supports sleep, and is a natural tonic.
I have to attribute its popularity to the yoga crowd who LOVES it!!. Yes-it has a rich flavor and and wellness benefits, but I love it because you can change the recipe according to season and take your evening herbs, menstrual health herbs like shatavari or ashwagandha with this drink also.
This traditional beverage combines turmeric with a blend of spices and natural sweeteners to create a soothing, nourishing experience. In this post, you will find my recipe for golden milk featuring turmeric, black pepper, dates, nutmeg, and gudda (Dried blackstrap molasses is called gudda-you can get it in Indian store). Or you can use a date syrup. The addition of molasses and dates make it iron rich and the turmeric is naturally supportive of inflammation.

Ingredients and Their Benefits
Turmeric: Contains curcumin, which may support joint health and reduce inflammation.
Black Pepper: Enhances curcumin absorption and adds a mild spicy kick.
Dates: Natural sweetener rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
Nutmeg: Adds warmth and aroma, known for its calming effects.
Blackstrap Molasses: Provides iron, calcium, and magnesium, along with a robust sweetness.
Milk of choice: Dairy (If you are using diary please use whole or 2 percent organic milk-and that is the preferred way to make this). If you cannot digest it, try lactose free milk. If that also does not work for you- a plant-based milk such as almond, coconut, or oat milk would suffice-but make sure you it has some fat content.
Step-by-Step Golden Milk Recipe
Ingredients
2 cups milk
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
2 pitted dates, chopped, and soaked in a few tsp warm water for 1 hour OR 1 tsp date syrup to make life easy
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (supports sleep)
1 tablespoon blackstrap molasses (supports anemia along with dates-a rich source or iron)
Optional: 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon or vanila or a few cardamoms for extra flavor
Instructions
Heat the milk
Pour the milk into a small saucepan and warm it over medium heat. Avoid boiling; just heat until steaming.
Add turmeric and spices
Stir in turmeric powder, black pepper, nutmeg, and cinnamon if using. Whisk well to combine.
Sweeten with dates and molasses
Add the date syrup or the chopped dates and blackstrap molasses. Continue stirring until the dates soften and dissolve, about 3-5 minutes.
Simmer gently
Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer for 5-7 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld and the spices to infuse the milk. (If you have used chopped dates, good idea to use a blender to smoothie the whole milk after it has cooled down).
Strain and serve
Use a fine mesh strainer to pour the golden milk into cups, removing any solids. Garnish with powdered cardamom. Serve warm.
Tips for the Best Golden Milk
Use fresh spices: Freshly ground black pepper and nutmeg provide more vibrant flavors.
Adjust sweetness: Add more dates or molasses if you prefer a sweeter drink.
Try different milks: Coconut milk adds richness, while oat milk offers a creamy texture.
Make it vegan: Use plant-based milk and ensure molasses is suitable for your diet.
Store leftovers: Golden milk can be refrigerated for up to 3 days. Reheat gently before drinking.
